Graeme PhotoGraeme

Graeme offers holistic and deep tissue massage along with yoga teaching and therapy (attento.me). He founded Barbican Massage when transferring the practice from Bermondsey to Barbican/Moorgate in November 2011.

Graeme balances his massage and yoga practice with his work as a user experience designer and researcher. So he totally understands the stresses and strains of the modern work environment and how to to cope with so many demands.

Finding just the right pressure to release your tension without undue discomfort and providing some yoga-based stretching for self-maintenance between sessions where appropriate, are the hallmarks of a massage session with Graeme. Check availability or book with GRAEME

Location

The massage studio is self-contained in the city, between Moorgate, Barbican and Old Street stations.

Note that the studio is street-facing so you may hear some street noises. You may also occasionally hear some noise from other business in the building.
There is no waiting room so please try to arrive no earlier than a couple of minutes before your session. There is normally 15mins allocated after each session to allow for changing and cleaning.

Benefit from massage and yoga experience

As Graeme is also a qualified yoga teacher so can suggest practices to help avoid tension build up between sessions.

There are three options for this:

Home-stretch suggestions

At the end of your massage, within your normal appointment time, some stretches based on yoga can be suggested for home practice to relieve symptoms between massages and, longer-term, reduce the need for massage.

Combined sessions

You may request to divide the time of your booking as you wish between yoga and massage. It is recommended to have a 90-minute session or longer for this..

Alternating sessions

Alternate, or choose each time, whether you would prefer a massage session or yoga session.

Common questions

What kind of massage do you offer?

The massage is therapeutic using Swedish/Holistic and Deep Tissue massage techniques. It can be applied systematically to the whole body or customised to any particular area according to your needs, preferences and the duration of the session. A full body treatment can include some or all of legs and feet, back, shoulders, glutes, neck, face and head, abdomen, arms and hands.

What kind of oil is used in the massage?

I use unscented oils sourced from naturallythinking.com. You may choose from grapeseed, sweet almond or coconut oils, or a rich blend of avocado, olive and coconut. These oils have been selected to leave your skin feeling nourished but not greasy at the end of the massage. A lotion alternative is available if you prefer.

How long should I allow for my massage?

You should choose 45, 60 or 90 minutes for your first session. The duration you book is the massage duration so allow for an extra 5-10 mins afterwards for rest and changing. There is a 15 min gap between each appointment.

If you would like an express service to leave by a specific time, just request this in the booking or on arrival.

How long you need for a full body massage very much depends on your size, muscle build and amount of tension to treat in focus areas. If you are taller and/or have well-developed muscles and/or lots of tension in the back/shoulder region then you can have a focused treatment in 60 mins or full body in 90 minutes.

Do you do outcalls?

No, I do not do outcalls, only appointments at the Attento Studio, Barbican.

What kind of music do you play?

I use a playlist of over 100 tracks comprising a mix of contemporary piano and string music as well as some classical. No 'new age' or 'whale music' ever. See the sample playlist on this page for a flavour.

You are also a yoga teacher. Can we do some yoga / show me some stretching / do some mediation along with the massage?

How many therapists work in the studio?

Graeme founded Barbican Massage in 2011 but collaborates with other like minded therapists and yoga teachers who make use of the same studio. See Therapists for more details.

Are you a full-time massage therapist? When are you available? Why can't I find a time that suits me?

I am a Yoga Teacher and Massage Therapist as well as User Experience Design Consultant and share my time between all three.
You can check real-time availability using the online booking system. Weekday evenings tend to get quite booked up in advance so keep trying.

I have some particular health conditions or am on medication, (this includes painkillers*). Can I still have a massage?

Before your first massage you need to complete the massage consent form with health information. There are certain conditions which either need to avoid massage in a particular area or completely. Some conditions or medications will require you either to have a letter from your GP or other healthcare professional. Otherwise, you need to self-certify that you wish to proceed without a letter from a medical professional.



*You should not take any painkillers such as Ibuprofen for a few hours before massage.
